Some History of Newport

Newport itself is a very fitting location for a movie that exudes such wealth, affluence, and abundance. During the industrial boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this area of Rhode Island became the hottest new summer social spot for the upper class. New money multimillionaires began to inhabit the coastline and build impressive mansions, which they referred to as ‘cottages.’ Because of this, it’s not surprising to learn that the producers and directors of the Great Gatsby movie determined this area as the perfect filming location.

The Great Gatsby Filming Location

If you’re wondering what mansions were used in The Great Gatsby movie in 1974, you’ve come to the right place. The massive mansion where Jay Gatsby resides, and hosts his lavish, jazz-age parties, is the Rosecliff Mansion. The building was completed in 1902 and was estimated to cost $2.5 million at that time. It was originally built for the Oelrich family and modeled after the Petit Trianon at Versailles.

Just south of the Rosecliff is the Marble House, which was also used in the film. The beautiful ballroom where Gatsby enters in his old military uniform and dances with Daisy Buchanan is located within the Marble House. This mansion was originally built for the Vanderbilts.
